Cairns

We flew from Sydney to Cairns and headed off the next day for a snorkel/dive trip on the Great Barrier Reef.  Ralph wen for a dive and I snorkelled at the first site, then we both snorkelled the second.  What fun!

Here's a giant clam...you know, the ones that grab your feet!!...NOT!  Just beautiful colours!

 We saw some beautiful coral.

 An underwater wonderland.

 Unicorn fish.

This was our boat.  We had wet suits because of the threat of jellyfish.

This is our next boat...yeah, right!  This is Paul Allen's boat, Microsoft mogul.  It's as big as a small cruise ship at 414 feet long.  Check out the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus_(yacht)

Another view...that little one is about is probably 70 to 100 feet.

We went on a rail up, gondola down trip to Kuranda.  We enjoyed both the trip up and down, but not so much the town itself as it was just a large tourist shop area.  It did have other attractions (butterfly park, small zoo, etc.) but it was a hot day and these attractions were too expensive for us to bother.

Nice scenery on the way up on the train.

The train cars were old and attractive....more than the old people in the seats

This was one of the viewpoint stops on the train.

These ferns grow in/on the trees.  They can weight a thousand pounds.

This was a view from the cable car.

At the bottom of the cable car was this "water strip".  There were cables all the way around and people can water ski just like you are on a rope tow.

Also, at the bottom, was a boomerang practice pit.
